If your only exposure to the Italian culture consists of seeing the Godfather movies and the old Untouchables television series, you have much to learn of the Italian people and culture.
In Italy, great emphasis is placed on what we Americans refer to as the nuclear family. Good food, conversation and hospitality are essential components of life in every Italian household. Even if you’re a stranger and a tourist, stopping for lunch at an Italian restaurant, you’re always made to feel welcome.
Italian people are generous of spirit and this quality shines through clearly in even the most superficial conversation. Lost? Just ask anyone for directions. The Italian people are gracious and will take the time to give you detailed directions or information, not letting you go until they are sure you understand.
Italy is an exotic land of plenty, with highly original regional menus comprised of local foods. Although a relatively small country, Italy boasts hundreds of wines and in excess of 450 different cheeses, all locally produced. If you’re a foodie, Italy will fascinate you. If you’d like to know how that bruschetta is made, all you need to do is ask. Italian people are proud of their food and are happy to share the secrets of their cuisine with you.
Italians are a demonstrative people, particularly fond of talking with their hands while speaking. This habit seems to underscore their passion for life, as though words are insufficient to demonstrate their overflowing emotions.
Perhaps one of the most endearing qualities of the Italian people is their fierce independence. Italians may form one of the last vestiges of a public willing to speak their minds. In the Italian culture, it is not only acceptable, it is expected that your opinionated opinion, no matter how far-fetched, should be in the mix. If your neighbor holds what you consider to be a ridiculous position, it’s all taken in stride by both sides and argued heatedly to the conclusion. Politicians in Italy quake at the prospect of facing an inflamed segment of the population.
Italy is famous for train strikes. The whole country can be brought to a virtual standstill if the rail workers feel they’re not getting a fair shake. The Italian people may be inconvenienced, but they support the striker’s right to strike. It’s a way of life. When the issues are resolved, transportation is again available and everyone moves on.
Independence, generosity and a general love for humanity are the signatures of the Italian people. We could all take a lesson from this ancient culture, still vibrant today.
